First-open is a poor engagement story

First-open is easy to record and easy to put on a slide. It answers a logistics question: did the binary run. Engagement questions start after the splash — which task was attempted, which screen held someone, which step they left.

A rostering team in KL Sentral brought a proud first-open cohort. The following screen was a conflict list. People opened the app, saw two shifts overlapping, and left. Calling that “engaged on day zero” made the week look healthier than the conflict screen deserved.

We still record first-open. We refuse to let it stand in for staying. If your only engagement event is first-open, the measurement review will be short and blunt: you can count launches, and you cannot yet talk about work done inside the product.
